About the Therapy We Offer
When many people think of psychotherapy, they think of traditional talk therapy because they are not aware of additional psychotherapy methods.
Traditional talk therapy takes a “top down” approach to treatment and focuses on identifying and challenging maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. All clinicians at Advocate Counseling and Consulting, PLLC offer traditional talk therapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), etc.
Many of our clients come to us looking for something different from traditional talk therapy because they feel the traditional talk therapy methods just did not work for them. This is where clinicians specifically trained in at least one “bottom up” approach to treatment is important to moving forward in therapy, rather than staying stuck. All clinicians at Advocate Counseling and Consulting, PLLC offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR Therapy. Many clinicians are trained in other “bottom up” approaches such as Brainspotting, Sensorimotor Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Expressive Arts Therapy.
We realize that therapy is not “one size fits all” and that using strictly one therapy method does not necessarily suit client needs. A skilled clinician will use an integrative or holistic approach to psychotherapy that blends various methods from the “bottom up” and “top down” therapy models to tailor treatment according to each client's needs.
Trauma-Informed & Trauma-Focused
Psychotherapy Services
Trauma-Informed: A trauma-informed approach to the delivery of behavioral health services includes an understanding of trauma and an awareness of the impact it can have across settings, services, and populations. It involves viewing trauma through an ecological and cultural lens and recognizing that context plays a significant role in how individuals perceive and process traumatic events, whether acute or chronic (SAMHSA, 2014).
Trauma-focused: A trauma-focused approach assumes that unhealed trauma plays a major role in presenting issues, denotes greater action in the delivery of treatment services, and promotes proactive treatment planning to heal the legacy of trauma (Marich J, Dansiger S, 2018).
